German biotech company BioNTech will close three manufacturing sites in Marburg, Idar-Oberstein and Tübingen, as well as operations in Singapore, after unsuccessful efforts to sell the facilities as planned. The closures are part of a wider restructuring of BioNTech’s manufacturing network, launched in May. The company cited a difficult market and investment environment and sharply reduced global demand for COVID-19 vaccines. Around 1,800 German employees are affected, with additional redundancy terms agreed with the works council. BioNTech aims to redirect resources toward its oncology pipeline and expects the restructuring to generate annual savings of about €500 million.
