Block has joined the x402 Foundation and contributed Bitcoin Lightning support to the open HTTP 402 payment protocol, enabling AI agents to make instant, low-cost Bitcoin payments for data, APIs and digital services. The x402 standard embeds payments directly into web requests, letting autonomous software complete machine-to-machine transactions without human approval. Lightning’s off-chain channels help handle frequent, tiny Bitcoin payments that agentic commerce is expected to generate. Block plans further contributions to Lightning integration and x402 working groups, while inviting developers to test the implementation. The move broadens x402’s backer base, which already includes Coinbase, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and the Solana Foundation.
